The Internet and My Home

As per this week's class assignment I will be discussing the internet and its place within my home. I think that it is interesting to note that most of us refer to the internet as a real tangible thing. The internet has become so assimilated into my daily life that I would be proverbially "lost without it. Within my home I have two computers. Both are less then 2 years old (which is already old but don't get me started on that). The better computer is in my room. I also have a scanner/printer/fax attached to it. I bought the computer with my own money for the primary reason of using it for school. As such I was responsible for deciding where to place it. My family consists of myself, my little sister and my parents. Out of the four of us, it is only myself and my little sister who are able to use computers with any real degree of understanding. I guess you could say we have a monopoly on technology within the home. My computer is in my room. My sister's computer is in her room. For matters of obvious convinced we decided that this was the best arrangement. We each have separate rooms, and each have access to our computers whenever we want, anytime day or night. Also my computer is in my room because I am the only one that uses it. I am also the only one who knows how to use it (aside from my sister). My parents have not yet relented, they refuse to enter the technological era. This setup is nice as it provides me privacy. When I am in my room I shut my door (I don't have a lock), and I am alone with my PC to complete whatever task needs to be done. I love having access to my computer anytime I want. I know that when I get home my PC will be there with no one on it. Because we live in a small house, my room is small, so the PC sits on a desk which takes up a fair amount of room. I guess you could say this is one of the disadvantages of having it in my room (confined space). None the less I would not have it any other way. I enjoy and look forward to the privacy that having my own computer gives me. I guess this is because I tend to be a private person. I also put a password lock on my computer so no one else (my sister) can use it. I have enough room for a small comfortable chair and that's it. Ideally I would like to have a bigger room, but would never want to ever change the location of my computer. When I get home I normally go into my room, boot up and start doing whatever it is that needs to be done. I am always by myself when on the computer (although I can hear what's going on around me). I am very territorial when it comes to my PC. When my sister asks to use my computer (because mine is faster) I remind here that she has her own, and this often sends her away angry. I use Rogers cable, and love the mobility of having high speed internet. As many of my friends have suggested I could move my computer out of my room, and put it in our downstairs basement, which is an entirely open space. I hate the idea. Somehow when I'm in my little room, on my PC, surfing the web, I feel as though I'm in my own little world, and I wouldn't change it for anything.

RELIGION: DID JESUS REALLY EXIST?

Now before you guys start making death threats against me, I am in no way suggesting that he either did or did not exist. I just wanted to point out an article on the CNN website: DID JESUS REALLY EXIST? Apparently a villager is suing the church for suggesting that they have been fraudulently misleading people into believeing into the existence of Jesus. I though it was a rather thought provoking assertion; from a legal standpoint. I have provided the link below. Please feel free to comment.

CYBER LAW

Hello everyone. I found an invaluable resource while surfing the net today. It's called the Cyber Law Encyclopedia. I will post the link below. As the essay due date draws nearer this source could prove to be an invaluable tool.

In addition I have also provided a link to the Supreme Court of Cananda. What's particularly beneficial about this site is that it allows you to view case decisions on line. For example, you can find precedent setting cases such as R. v. Morgentaler. Also, it is a relatively easy site to navigate.

Election Time

Well it's that time again. Voting is this Monday, so i thought it fitting that I make a prediction as to how many seats each party will win. Please feel free to do the same (Sorry no prize for the winner).

WHAT IS A BLOG?

In order to define the term blog I used the wikipedia website.

According to this site a Blog is:

A blog is a web site in which journal entries are posted on a regular basis and displayed in reverse chronological order. The term blog is a shortened form of weblog or web log. Authoring a blog, maintaining a blog or adding an article to an existing blog is called "blogging". Individual articles on a blog are called "blog posts," "posts" or "entries". A person who posts these entries is called a "blogger". A blog comprises hypertext, images, and links (to other webpages and to video, audio and other files). Blogs use conversational style of documentation. Often blogs focus on a particular "area of interest", such as political goings-on. Some blogs discuss personal experiences.
Blogs can be hosted by a blog hosting service
, or can be run by a user with blog software on a regular webhosting servie.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blog

I would really recommend you visit the Wikipedia link if you are interested in blogs. The site has a comprehensive posting of general information on blogs, things such as the history of Blogs

This is my first Blog. I am still very new at blogging. I hope I haven't made too much of a mess. Thus far the Blogging experience has not been too bad. I must admit I was a little nervous before trying this out. I still can't figure out how to upload a picture, but i'm sure i'll figure it out sometime soon. I chose this specific template for my blog because it was something that caught my eye. Nevertheless, the writing is easy to read on this background. I hope you all enjoy it.

WHAT DO I INTEND FOR MY BLOG?

I intend to use my Blog to discuss legal issues both past and present. These issues could deal with the internet or a current hot legal topic (including highly publicized case) they can deal with any class material). I would also like to tie in class material to our disscussions if and when possible. For example (taken from the first semester) how do most of you feel about CCTV on public streets following you around. Is this an invasion of privacy?

The internet is a relatively new phenomenon as far as the law goes, and there will undoubtedly be some exciting cases which come up in the near future. In essence, I will be using this blog to discuss technology and the law. Many of us take the internet for granted. We simply boot up and type away. However behind these seemingly simple tasks are a great assortment of legal issues (i.e. copyright laws, domain name laws, piracy laws etc). To get a better understanding of this please visit the link I have provided at the bottom of the page. Ultimately I hope this Blog provides all of us with a better understanding of the law, technology, and the internet. I have included a link at the bottom of the page to get you started.

"Courts around the world are creating Internet law right now--a process that is both exciting and frightening to watch. Unlike other areas of commerce that can turn to historical traditions to help settle disputes and guide the development of the law, the law of the Internet has no history to fall back on. "Cyber law" is instead being developed by judges who must do their best to fit legal disputes on the Internet into preexisting legal frameworks. As a result, the legal principles governing conduct and commerce in cyberspace are still in a state of flux. Claims of trademark and copyright infringement have become common place items on the World Wide Web." (www.bitlaw.com)
